What causes sleeplessness or insomnia?

Let’s understand what causes poor sleep in the first place. Many things can cause you to sleep badly. According to the Mayo Clinic, insomnia be caused by:

Your endocannabinoid system plays a central role in how CBD can positively influence your body’s many functions. Within our own body, the endocannabinoid system is essential for keeping everything in balance. Already, we’re producing our own cannabinoids, a type of lipid metabolite—called ‘endocannabinoids’ because they are occurring in our own bodies. When these endocannabinoids are released from our brain, they bind to endocannabinoid receptors, CB1 (present in the central nervous system) and CB2 (present in the peripheral nervous system). This results in positive effects that leave us feeling well, such as lessening pain and helping with digestion. Often, the process of our own endocannabinoids binding to endocannabinoid receptors occurs naturally. For example, endocannabinoids are released in the brain when we exercise. According to a study completed by researchers at the University of Heidelberg Medical School, there is evidence that endocannabinoids may be part of what causes what we call a “runner’s high”. But we can also get additional cannabinoids by consuming them. And, outside of producing them ourselves, we can get them from the cannabis plant. That’s what makes CBD so powerful—and why it’s such a great choice for those suffering from insomnia.

One in four Americans develop insomnia every year. In another similar trial in 2016, a case report was published that demonstrated CBD’s usefulness in treating anxiety and sleep disorders caused by PTSD as well. In another study, which carried out clinical trials of CBD, subjects taking 160 mg of cannabidiol slept significantly more than those taking a placebo.

How to consume CBD for Insomnia

There are various ways to take CBD, such as:

  • Oils and tinctures
  • Vape concentrates
  • Edibles, such as gummies
  • Capsules and pills

Vaping is the fastest way to get CBD into your system. However, its effectiveness needs further research.

The optimal dose to manage insomnia depends on your body chemistry, weight, and nature of your sleeping disorder. Most clinical trials involve the use of CBD at a dose of 25 mg – 1,500 mg per day. It’s a great idea to start with a smaller dose and gradually increase it to a dose that suits you the best.

CBD is a great option for treating many medical issues and insomnia is just one of them.
